palatalized: pronounced with a secondary articulation involving the blade of the tongue (the part immediately behind the tip) in the palatal region. (See the diagram of the principal organs of articulation.) This articulation is generally perceived after the primary consonant and is written with a superscript y. For example, in fast speech the "pi" of "piano" tends to be pronounced as a palatalized p [p^y]. The ñ in many varieties of Spanish is a palatalized n [n^y]. Compare labialized.
