fricative: a sound formed by forcing air through a small opening at the place of articulation, producing turbulence (or "friction") and thus a hissing or buzzing sound. For example, f, v and s are fricatives. See manner of articulation; compare obstruent, stop, affricate. [Spanish: fricativo]
